Overview
News from the Department of Medicine centralized news website is managed by the central communications team, working in conjunction with division communications staff.
News items that feature faculty, staff or trainees from a division automatically publishes to your division website. This helps curate department news that otherwise might be missed.
Objective
Represent the public face of the department in a way that highlights our history, our diversity, our people, and our achievements.
Audience
Current and prospective faculty, staff, students, and trainees; current and potential research collaborators; alumni; donors; general public; news media.

content Guidelines
Items posted to the news site should appeal to a broader audience across the division, department, UW, among media outlets and to the general public. Relevant content may include any of the following:
- Subject of keen interest to the news media, resulting in a formal news release, featuring DOM faculty, staff, students or trainees
- Features (e.g. chair’s blog, staff, faculty, division spotlights)
- Awards
- Prestigious national or international awards, as well as regional, local, and UW awards, will be announced as stand-alone stories.
- Multiple award-winners will be announced simultaneously in one news item.
- DEI initiatives
- Research pursuits and findings of general public interest
- Feature articles covering a topic that engages the public
- Major grant awards establishing a new research or training program
- Advances and trends in teaching, clinical care, public policy and service
- Newsworthy stories about patient care and/or patient care teams
- Topical Q&As, features and analysis
- Human interest profiles of our faculty, staff, or trainees
In addition to posting original content, we also selectively link to content from internal and external sources such as UW newsletters, magazines, websites and external news media outlets.
Out of scope content
- Publications
- Select publications are featured in DOM Week and via social media and are not appropriate as standalone news items on a public website
- A link to a publication may be included as part of an in-depth research article
- Events
- Events should be posted to the division and/or department events calendar
- Some events may be featured in the “coming up” or “events of interest” sections of DOM Week.
- On rare occasions, a news story may be generated on a speaker or event of widespread public interest.
Submitting news items for consideration
- Make sure the news item meets the content guidelines above
- Image: you will need to submit at least one image (headshot, etc.)
- Include quotes if possible/applicable
- Include relevant links to external content (if the article references a website, publication, taskforce, etc.)
- Send submissions to your communications contact.
